HTC One Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Today we will be comparing the specs of HTC One Max to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The HTC One Max sits in the largest smartphone size category, and can also be called phablet. The Note 3 is definitely the most popular in this sort of screen size area, the largest screen size, but what’s different between these two devices? How do you compare them? Lets find out below.

HTC One Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Size and Screen

HTC One Max : 164.5 x 82.5 x 10.3 mm
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 : 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm

Looking at the size of both these devices, they are larger than your standard smartphone, but the HTC One Max is larger than the Note 3 as well. 13.3 mm in height, 3.3 mm in width and 2 mm in terms of thickness, so it is a little bit larger than the Note 3, specially in terms of the height, it is quite a little bit taller and that’s because of the speakers, which we will be discussing later on. One of the other reasons of the larger size is because it has a bigger screen of 5.9 inches to that of 5.7 inches on the Note 3.

Resolution of both these displays are of 1080 x 1920 pixels, which is definitely amazing, making full HD videos looking great on them.

Weight, Build and Color

The HTC One Max weighs 217 grams to that of 168 grams on the Note 3, making it 49 grams heavier which might be a bit too much for a general smartphone users. This is because the One Max occupies a Curved aluminium body similar to the HTC One, making it look really slick and premium compared to others.

The Note 3, has the polycarbonate plastic, but Samsung has gone away from that hyperglaze finish, the glossy plastic that they have traditionally gone for and the back cover is a leather style material, it’s got the fine stitching to look like a notebook. Advantage of the Note 3 here is, although it comes with a plastic build it is a lot lighter, feels more compact in the pocket, and that’s quite important specially when you are considering this sized devices.

The Note 3 is available, in the black, white and pink versions, but you have also got a removable back, where you can have lots of variations there. The HTC One Max just has the silver right now, we may see different varieties and colors later on.

Memory and Performance

Note 3 is one of the best and fastest smartphones out there at the moment with a 3GB RAM, 2.3 GHz Quad Core processor of Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, along with the latest Adreno 330 GPU.

HTC One Max has a 2 GB RAM, 1.7 GHz Quad core Snapdragon 600 processor with Adreno 320 GPU making it slow compared to the Note 3 who has an advantage over performance.

Internal memory of the HTC One Max come with 16 / 32 GB versions, whereas the Note 3 of 32 / 64 GB versions. Both these memories can be expanded using Micro SD up to 64 GB. The Samsung Galaxy line up of phones have had the expandable memory option for quite a while now, but this is the first time we have seen this on the HTC One series.

Cameras

A 13 Megapixel camera sits on the back of the Note 3, compared to the 4 Megapixel on HTC One Max, which is an ultra pixel camera, so the pixels are quite a bit larger. When it comes to capturing images on low light the HTC One Max is way better than the Note 3. In good light, the Note 3’s camera produces absolutely awesome images with great detail because of the high resolution as well. So, the resolution of the Note 3 will win here. If you are someone who loves capturing moments on low light, then the HTC One Max is definitely recommended over the Samsung Masterpiece.

Both these phones are packed with lots of extra features on their cameras along with Dual Camera which can be used for video calling purposes.

Operating System and Additional Features

Both the Note 3 and the One Max run on Android Jelly Bean 4.3, the latest version of Android right now, which will be updated to 4.4 very soon. Samsung has Touch Wiz and the HTC has the HTC Sense UI, having their own advantages and disadvantages.

Looking onto additional features, the Note 3 comes with S-Pen feature which is quite unique and has Air Command now, allowing you to circle items and square them and put them into a scrap book really easily. It has a got a really nice handwriting recognition as well, and you can also multitask, you can draw a box and open apps within them, multiwindows is also great, you can open the same app in multiple windows. So there is some really advanced multitasking abilties on the Note 3 that is really going to take advantage of the extra RAM. There are lots of gesture controls such as, Air View, Air Gesture, so you can hover your finger or the pen on top of the device and do lots of actions through them and some of the additional sensors that you have got on there as well, such as the barometer, the thermometer and the humidity sensor, which is going to be really useful for the S Health App as well, so its going to keep track of lots of things in tehre, which is quite nice to see too.

You have got USB 3.0, making it the first smartphone accompanying this, making it really fast in terms of transferring data to your computer and syncing and charging your smartphone through your computer as well.

Now the HTC One, it does not have the pen feature, so you would be needing to use your hands completely for this device. But it does have a finger print scanner on the back. So its unlike Apple’s fingerprint scanner which is on the home button on the front. Using the scanner on the HTC device, you can also set particular apps to open when you swipe a set of fingers (you can set up to 3).

The HTC One Max comes with those dual frontal stereo speakers with the built in app HTC BoomSound™. This is really unique to HTC, watching videos and things, the sound is going to be really great facing at you, and these speakers on the HTC devices are second to none, they are simply the best ones out there and the loudest too. The do not have the beats audio software, which is something to bear on mind with the One Max, unlike the HTC One, but the dual stereo speakers are definitely an advantage here.

Battery Power

HTC One : Li-Po 3300 mAh battery
Note 3 : Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery

As you can see above, they have similar power outputs offering enough strength for both these phones to work throuhgout the day. The HTC One Max does not have a removal battery, so it is fixed in place. The fact that it has a got a removeable back, where you can access the expandable storage. The Note 3, however has a removable battery, allowing you to carry a spare one if you want, offering the option to keep a back up if you are going for a long journey.

Verdict

Both these phones pack some really nice features. I would say, overall the Note 3 does have a better internals, with lot more new features in there. The HTC One Max has the fingerprint scanner, which is interesting to see and also that premium build with those dual frontal stereo speakers. But have they done enough to compete in this area? The HTC One Max is the underdog in this area, making the Note 3 dominant in most aspects.

It would have been nice to see a little bit more on the HTC One Max, especially in terms of processing and some latest kits. Do let us know your views in the comments below.
